SCP-046: The Metamorphic Mimic
Item #: SCP-046
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-046 is to be contained within a lead-reinforced steel chamber, measuring 5 meters by 5 meters by 3 meters, located in the Biohazard Containment Wing of Site-██. A 200-watt UV-C lamp must be kept continuously operational within the chamber, and the ambient temperature is to be maintained at a constant 4°C. Access is to be provided via a triple-layered magnetic-lock door system and must be escorted by a minimum of two Level 3 security personnel at all times. Direct visual contact with SCP-046 or approaching within 3 meters is strictly prohibited. Surveillance will be conducted via high-resolution infrared cameras. Any interaction or testing with SCP-046 requires written approval from O5 Command and must be overseen by at least one Level 4 biohazard specialist. Should any attempt at form manipulation be observed, the chamber is to be immediately flooded with carbon dioxide gas to ensure the incapacitation of SCP-046.
Description: SCP-046 is a complex biological organism genetically compatible with human DNA but possessing extraordinary cellular plasticity (the ability to change shape). Genetic analysis indicates a unique cellular structure and protein-folding mechanism not matched to any known species. This mechanism allows SCP-046 to alter the shape, size, and arrangement of its own cells with incredible speed and precision.
SCP-046’s primary and most dangerous ability is to create a perfect replica of any human form it observes. This imitation is not limited to external appearance; it can replicate the target individual's clothing, personal accessories, vocal tone, and even subtle behavioral mannerisms. The replication process takes approximately 5 to 10 seconds, during which SCP-046’s body mass rapidly reorganizes. During the copying process, SCP-046 has been observed to temporarily revert to a semi-liquid or putty-like substance.
Observation by SCP-046 is typically achieved through direct visual contact. It can initiate the replication process shortly after viewing the target individual. In its replicated form, it can interact socially, speak, and behave as a normal human being. This capability has led to multiple security breaches and instances of confusion within the Foundation.
Crucial Note: It is not fully understood whether the internal organs, skeletal structure, and nervous system in SCP-046's replicated forms are also perfect copies. X-ray scans and other imaging methods have shown structures resembling normal human anatomy within the copied form, but whether these structures are functional is unknown. However, SCP-046 is not believed to require sustenance or other basic biological necessities to survive in a copied form.
Discovery: SCP-046 was discovered in 19██ following an incident at a research facility in ████, USA, which resulted in the disappearance of all facility personnel. Security footage showed an unknown entity infiltrating the facility shortly before one of the personnel was replicated and began to mimic the others. Foundation agents successfully captured one of the mimicked individuals and observed the entity reverting to its original form. Initial engagement was extremely challenging and resulted in the loss of several agents.
Addendum 046-01: Anomalous Observations
Mimicry Extent: The most alarming feature of SCP-046 is its ability to also acquire the knowledge and memory of the person it replicates to a certain degree. It appears to extract a form of "template" of the target's neural structure and brain activity during replication. This allows SCP-046 to convincingly simulate the replicated individual's memories and behavior.
Weaknesses: SCP-046 has shown a weakness to UV-C light and cold temperatures. Exposure to UV-C light causes cellular breakdown, and temperatures below 4°C significantly slow its cellular activity, temporarily inhibiting its shapeshifting ability. These weaknesses form the basis of the current containment procedures.
Motivation: SCP-046's motivation is unknown. It is not believed to actively seek to harm the humans it copies, but rather acts as though it is "experimenting" or "observing." However, it is clearly willing to overcome any obstacle to achieve its unknown objective.
Log 046-A: Initial Contact and Capture
[DATE REDACTED]: Anomaly in life-form signature detected within the facility during the site investigation.
[DATE REDACTED]: Agents encountered a number of mimicked personnel inside the facility. Attempts at communication resulted in inconsistent behavior from the mimics.
[DATE REDACTED]: One of the mimics surrendered upon command from Agent Keller, rapidly entering a semi-liquid state and beginning to change shape. Agents' quick response exposed it to UV-C light, temporarily inhibiting its ability to move. This remains the only observation of SCP-046’s original form.
Future Testing: Tests are being planned to determine the limits of SCP-046's replication ability (e.g., replicating multiple individuals simultaneously, replicating non-human forms) and the permanence of the knowledge it acquires. However, the risks involved necessitate lengthy approval and high-security protocols.
Conclusion: SCP-046 is a highly dangerous Keter-class entity posing an extremely high security risk to the Foundation due to its ability to perfectly mimic humanity. Its hidden nature and potential for knowledge acquisition make it one of the most challenging SCPs to contain. Continuous surveillance and stringent containment procedures are vital to minimize the threat SCP-046 poses to humanity.
